The ShopDirect distribution centre in Wigan is enjoying better productivity and reduced turnover of staff after workers began to learn new skills with the help of National Book Tokens.
The project known within the plant as 'The Learning Shop' is a partnership between ShopDirect, Usdaw and Wigan and Leigh College. Almost one third of the 1,200 workers at the Shop Direct centre have enrolled on courses with the support of the company, their union Usdaw and the local college. Many have enrolled on courses to improve their basic literacy and numeracy, while others have chosen courses including yoga and sign language, five workers have even progressed as far as degree standard.
It has gained national recognition after being named the regional winner of the National Training Awards
The success of the project has impressed the company, which has used it as a blueprint for similar projects across the country. The Learning Shop is open to all workers at the home shopping distribution centre and is now part of an enhanced employment package, also made available to seasonal workers.
Development of union learning representatives and joint management/union co-ordination of the Learning Shop, has also resulted in better employee relations. Enthusiastic line managers have even accepted devolved responsibility for workforce development.
