I've received a gift card in the 'Is this a winning card' promotion, how do I know what value is on it?

You can check your gift card’s value by using online Balance Enquiry function, by asking in store at your nearest bookshop or by phoning 0845 602 7423.

If a message appears saying your gift card has not been activated, then it is not a winning card and no value is on it.

If my National Book Tokens Gift Card has some value on it, where can I spend this?

National Book Tokens Gift Cards can be used in thousands of bookshops across the UK, including independents and chains. To find your nearest bookshop, use our stockist search.

Gift Cards are valid in the UK only. They cannot be purchased or redeemed in the Republic of Ireland, Isle of Man or Channel Islands where paper gift vouchers continue to be sold and accepted.

 

Charity Donation

What do I need to do to help National Book Tokens donate 10p to Book Aid International?

Simply go to our Charity Donation page, enter your details and we will send you an email with a link to click which will trigger our donation. Then you can either copy a link to your own email and forward this to your friends or enter the names and email addresses of up to five friends who you think will appreciate the chance to win a £100 National Book Tokens Gift Card. They will each receive an email with a link to click back to this website and this will trigger National Book Tokens to donate 10p to Book Aid International.

Can I see and edit the email my friends receive?

Yes there is a preview of the email next to where you enter your friends’ details. Click on ‘Edit Message’ to open a text box where you can write a personalised message to your friends.

How many times can I send the emails to my friends?

You can return to the Charity Donation page and enter your name and email address as the sender to as many friends as you like. However, only one donation per verified email address will be allowed.

Will I receive an email each time my friends donate?

Yes we will send you a short email notifying you that your friend has clicked in the link in their email and triggered a National Book Tokens 10p donation to Book Aid International.

What is a verified email address?

An email address is verified when the recipient clicks on the link in the email sent from us. No further donations for that email address will be allowed once the link has been clicked once.

How can I opt-out of receiving any more emails from National Book Tokens?

You can opt-out of receiving emails from National Book Tokens at any time. Simply click on the link at the bottom of any email from us which says ‘To stop receiving information from National Book Tokens, click here’.

The paper National Book Tokens gift vouchers are still currently sold and accepted in bookshops across Ireland.

Bookshops include all the major chains and local independent bookshops.

National Book Tokens make the perfect gift for book lovers of all ages as they can be exchanged for all kinds of books from the best selling new fiction to reference and school textbooks as well as maps.

Are National Book Tokens easy to send?
National Book Tokens gift cards come with a free backing card and envelope, they are the right size to send as first or second class post and can be used in bookshops across the UK.

National Book Tokens paper gift vouchers which are still valid in Ireland continue to come with a free card and envelope and can be posted first or second class.

What denominations are National Book Tokens available in?
Any amount between £1 and £250 can be loaded onto a National Book Tokens Gift Card which is valid in bookshops across the UK.

National Book Tokens Gift Vouchers are sold and accepted across Ireland in Irish Euro vouchers, and are available in the following denominations of €2, €5, €10, €20 and €30.

Can change be given for a National Book Token?

Regarding Gift Cards, if the value of your purchase is less than the value on the card, the balance remains on the card for future purchases. They cannot be exchanged for cash in bookshops and change will not be given.

Regarding Paper Vouchers, these cannot not be exchanged for cash. If the value of the book(s) you purchase is less than the value of the paper token, it is at the bookseller's discretion whether they give the change in the form of National Book Tokens (gift cards or vouchers) or cash.

Can National Book Tokens be used online?
National Book Tokens can be used against online purchases of books or book related products only on the websites of bookshops that have this online facility. Please visit the specific bookshop’s website for more information on their policy.

At present, National Book Tokens paper gift vouchers cannot be used against online purchases of books or book related products.

Is it safe to buy National Book Tokens from auction sites?
We do not recommend that you purchase National Book Tokens gift vouchers or gift cards from auction sites. Although the sellers may be legitimate we have had reports of non delivery of items. We advise caution especially if the seller has a large quantity of vouchers or gift cards, numerous lots to sell or is offering various denominations.

How do I use my National Book Tokens Gift Card?
Simply take your gift card to the till and use it as you would any gift voucher. The bookshop will deduct your purchase amount from the gift card’s value and give the gift card back to you.

What is the minimum and maximum amount I can load onto the Gift Card?
National Book Tokens Gift Cards can be loaded with any amount from a minimum of £1 to a maximum of £250.

Can National Book Tokens Gift Cards be topped-up with more value?
Yes, the gift cards can be topped up with any amount up to the maximum value of £250. This can be done by taking your gift card to your nearest bookshop where you can put more value on it. Find your nearest bookshop by using our stockist search.

Do I have to spend the entire Gift Card’s value at once?
No, you can spend as much of the gift card’s value as you like, whenever you like, providing your gift card has not expired. Any remaining balance will stay on the gift card until your next purchase.

Is there a limit to the number of times a National Book Tokens Gift Card can be used?
No, the gift card can be used any number of times until all the balance is used.

Does the National Book Tokens Gift Card have an expiry date?
If the Gift Card is not used for a period of 24 consecutive months, the gift card will expire and any remaining value will be deducted.

To ensure that a Gift Card remains active you either need to use it to purchase a book, have it topped up or do a balance enquiry. The next 24 consecutive month period will begin once the gift card has been used or its balanced checked.

Can I still redeem National Book Tokens paper gift vouchers?
Yes, National Book Tokens paper gift vouchers do not have an expiry date and you can continue to redeem these in any participating bookshop. Find your nearest bookshop by using our stockist search.

How do I find out how much value is on the gift cards?
You can check your National Book Tokens Gift Card value at any time.

What happens if my National Book Tokens Gift Card is declined?
Your gift card may have expired, or the available balance on the gift card could be less than the purchase amount and you could use another form of payment to pay the difference

Alternatively, it may have been blocked due to fraudulent activity reported on it. Please phone our helpline on 0845 604 1698 and we can investigate further.

What happens if my National Book Tokens Gift Card is lost or stolen?
National Book Token Gift Cards should be treated like cash, so unfortunately if they are lost or stolen we are unable to refund any balance that was remaining on the card.

Can the bookshop give me change in cash back from a National Book Tokens Gift Card?
The remaining balance on the gift card must remain on the Gift Card. The bookshop cannot give cash back from the gift card’s balance.

Can I use my National Book Tokens Gift Card on Amazon/Play.com?
You cannot currently use your National Book Tokens Gift Card on these websites.

Can I use my National Book Tokens Gift Card in supermarkets?
